It’s not a castle and it didn’t
belong to Scotty. So what’s so special about Scotty’s
Castle? It’s a story as lively and colorful as the land
it occupies. The plot? A Chicago businessman in poor health, and
his deeply religious wife, get lured into investing in a non existent
gold mine by a flamboyant desert prospector in a place called
Death Valley. The couple builds a luxurious vacation home out
here and Scotty tells reporters it’s “a shack I put
up over my gold mine”. The American public becomes enamored
with the story of Death Valley Scotty and his Castle and journey
to Death Valley just to see him while businessman-owner Albert
Johnson chuckles in the background. It’s a fun tale of desert
adventures set against the backdrop of a beautiful home filled
with 1920’s technology and treasures brought from all over
the world.
In addition to its stunning architecture and furnishings, the
Castle also features a large collection of Panamint Shoshone basketry
and memorabilia from Scotty’s days with the Buffalo Bill
Wild West Show. Today Park Rangers present living history tours
of Scotty’s Castle every day.
A separate technology tour leads visitors into the underground
tunnels of the Castle where the engineering feat of the Castle’s
construction becomes apparent.
